About the role:

 

We are seeking a Cloud Engineering Manager to lead our growing and talented team of cloud engineers within the Solutions  Engineering (SE) team. This individual will play a pivotal role in interfacing with business units, managing projects, and  ensuring the successful execution of cloud migration initiatives.  Reporting to the Head of EITS - Global SRE and working closely  with the larger portfolio management team, the Cloud Engineering Manager will also engage directly with AWS and drive our  internal "migration factory" efforts.

 

A day in this role:

 

Team Leadership:

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of cloud engineers with a strong focus on professional growth and project delivery

• Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture that sets a high standard on continuous improvement

• Direct building, stewardship, and representation of a catalog of technical and service capabilities of both team and the  broader EITS, Cloud Business Office, and security orgs. ​​​​​​  IaC repositories representative of best practices, security guidelines, and technical maturity and reusability

• Lead team in building team working agreements, standards, and holding team members accountable

• Collaborating and engaging with other EITS – Global SRE leaders to create a virtuous feedback cycle of new use cases,  standards, practices, and technical execution

 

Project Planning and Management:

• Interface with various business units to understand their cloud migration needs and provide consultative support

• Plan and manage the capacity of the engineering team to ensure timely and successful project delivery

• Oversee the execution of cloud migration projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives and technical requirements

• Utilize strong agile methodologies to manage and deliver projects, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and  iterative delivery

 

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Serve as the primary point of contact between the cloud engineering team, business units, and other key stakeholders

• Collaborate with portfolio management to report on project status, team capacity, and key performance metrics

• Engage directly with AWS to leverage their expertise, tools, and resources in support of migration efforts

 

Technical Oversight:

• Ensure adherence to best practices for cloud architecture, security, and operations.

• Drive the implementation of the "migration factory" concept to streamline and standardize cloud migrations across the  organization.

• Provide technical guidance and support for complex cloud projects and issues.

• Decompose complex project work into manageable tasks and ensure accurate reporting of progress and issues.

• Possess advanced skills in AWS, including advanced networking, security, and optimization techniques, and  stay current with new AWS services and features.

 

The expertise requested:

 

Scripting and Automation:

• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, Perl, Golang, or PowerShell.

• Experience with automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).

 

Cloud Fundamentals:

• Extensive knowledge of AWS services and best practices, including EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC, IAM, and CloudFormation.

• Experience with AWS networking concepts and services, such as VPC, Direct Connect, and Route 53.

• Deep understanding of best practices including cost optimization, account management, multi-account security tooling, etc.

 

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

• Strong configuration management practices

• Strong experience with IaC tools like Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and CDK (Cloud Development Kit).

 

Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD):

• Proficiency in setting up and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, Harness, GitLab CI, or AWS CodePipeline.

• Familiarity with artifact storage and management (e.g., Artifactory, Nexus).

 

Security Practices:

• Experience with shifting left security practices, integrating security into the development lifecycle.

• Knowledge of AWS security best practices, identity and access management (IAM), and compliance standards.

 

Networking:

• Solid understanding of networking principles, including DNS, VPN, firewalls, and load balancers.

• Experience with AWS networking services and configurations.

 

Monitoring and Logging:

• Strong experience with monitoring and logging tools such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, Dynatrace, ELK stack, or  Splunk.

• Strong debugging and analytical skills utilizing monitoring and logging

 

Miscellaneous

• Strong diagraming skills

• Experience in EKS and helm charts

 

Leadership and Management:

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team of engineers

• Excellent project management skills, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation

• Ability to manage team capacity and prioritize work effectively

• Proactive and comprehensive in solutioning, communicating, and executing

 

Communication and Collaboration:

• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical

stakeholders.

• Proven ability to build strong relationships with business units, portfolio management, and external partners.

• Collaborative mindset with a focus on achieving common goals.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically.

• Ability to make informed decisions in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.

• Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing business needs and emerging technologies.• Innovative mindset with a passion for continuous improvement and driving change.

 

Agile Methodologies:

• Strong agile methodologies skill set with experience in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and iterative delivery.

• Proficiency in decomposing complex project work into manageable tasks and ensuring accurate progress reporting.

• You are passionate about building and running distributed systems at scale in production. You  understand the challenges and trade-offs to be made when building and deploying systems to  production.

• Create automation for anything that is repeatable and can be automated.

• Expertise in working with container deployment and orchestration technologies at scale with strong  knowledge of the fundamentals to include service discovery, deployments, monitoring, scheduling, load balancing.  • Knowledge of best practices related to security, performance, and high availability.

• Highly skilled in identifying performance bottlenecks, identifying anomalous system behavior, and  determining the root cause of incidents.

• Experience working with APM and log aggregation tools as well as configuring the integrations and  monitoring needed to leverage these tools.

• You've demonstrated the ability to effectively work collaboratively across functions and communicate  between many different teams.

• Interest in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.

• Systematic problem-solving approach coupled with strong communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive.

• Ability to debug and optimize code and automate routine tasks
