The Position

Roche has established the Global Analytics and Technology Center of Excellence (GATE) to drive analytics- and technology-driven solutions by partnering with Roche affiliates across the globe.

As a Data Scientist, you will be at the forefront of designing, building, and maintaining scalable machine learning systems within Roche's dynamic data ecosystem. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact by operationalizing cutting-edge models that drive better healthcare and business outcomes. In this high-impact role, you will collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and business leaders to build production-grade infrastructures, enabling seamless machine learning processes while tackling challenges to ensure our ML models are production-ready, monitored effectively, and continuously optimized.

The Opportunity

ML Infrastructure and Pipeline Development: Build the backbone of AI innovation.

• Develop scalable, production-grade machine learning pipelines for streamlined data ingestion, model training, and inference.
• Automate end-to-end workflows for data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model retraining to maximize efficiency.
• Ensure a seamless transition from experimental models to operational production setups in collaboration with data scientists.
• Build reusable frameworks and tools to standardize and fast-track machine learning development cycles.

Model Deployment and Monitoring: Ensure reliability in real-world environments.

• Deploy robust ML models in production environments leveraging state-of-the-art cloud services (Proficiency in AWS preferred).
• Implement monitoring systems to stay ahead of data drift, model decay, and performance fluctuations.
• Engineer systems for scalable, reliable, and highly available deployed models with quickly actionable alert mechanisms.

Collaboration and Impact: Be the driver of transformation.

• Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, IT teams, and business stakeholders to transform abstract requirements into scalable machine learning solutions.
• Lead MLOps initiatives end-to-end—designing, deploying, and monitoring infrastructure.
• Advocate engineering excellence as a mentor for best practices in CI/CD, version control, and automated testing.
• Shape Roche's AI/ML roadmap by creating infrastructure that bridges traditional machine learning models and cutting-edge generative AI.

Emerging AI Solutions: Push the boundaries.

• Partner with research teams to integrate Generative AI into current workflows and production pipelines.
• Experiment with cutting-edge technologies like prompt engineering with Large Language Models (LLMs) to expand automation possibilities and enhance explainability.
• Foster the adoption of orchestration tools like Kubeflow, Airflow, or MLflow for comprehensive model lifecycle management.

Leadership and Governance: Empower teams while building responsibly.

• Communicate complex technical concepts into actionable business strategies that address stakeholder pain points and priorities.
• Mentor junior engineers, fostering growth and technical confidence within the team.
• Advocate for ethical AI implementation and data privacy adherence, ensuring that Roche remains a leader in ethical innovation.
• Promote excellence in coding, machine learning workflows, and project delivery across data science teams.

Who You Are

You are passionate about leveraging machine learning and advanced analytics to solve real-world challenges, and you have a proven track record of making meaningful contributions to end-to-end machine learning deployment.

What You Bring

• Experience:

• 4+ years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning Engineering, Data Engineering, or MLOps.

• Proven expertise in designing scalable and production-grade ML systems, deploying supervised/unsupervised models, and working with NLP techniques.

• Practical knowledge of large-scale distributed data processing frameworks.

• Technical Skills:

• Advanced proficiency in Python, PySpark, and SQL for ML workflows.

• Knowledge of popular ML libraries such as Scikit-learn, Spark MLlib, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and MLflow.
• Real-world experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred; familiarity with GCP or Azure is a bonus).
• Expertise in CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
• Proficiency in deploying and scaling ML models using AWS services, such as S3, SageMaker, Lambda, and others.

Nice-to-Have:

• Familiarity with orchestration tools like Kubeflow, Airflow, or Prefect for creating fluid ML pipelines.
• Hands-on experience with Generative AI, especially Large Language Models and transformer-based architectures.
• An appreciation for data governance, security, and ensuring ethical AI processing in production environments.

Education:

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or equivalent fields.
• Certifications in MLOps, AWS Cloud, or Data Engineering are highly desirable.
