About the Role

As a key member of the General Accounting team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of our financial reporting. This position requires a strong understanding of US GAAP and statutory accounting principles, as well as experience with financial systems such as SAP, JDE, and Oracle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Manager of General Accounting to ensure all deliverables are successfully achieved, including operational performance, people management, and adherence to compliance requirements.
  • Serve as an independent contributor for a component of the General Accounting function, inclusive of General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Reconciliations, Month End and Quarter End Close, Statutory & Financial Reporting, and US GAAP General Ledger reporting.
  • Assist the Manager of General Accounting as needed; participate in or lead special projects that require creative and analytical skills.
  • Provide guidance to the GA accountants as needed.
  • Understand the functionality, interfaces, and interdependencies of Thermo Fisher's financial processes and systems; ensure the existence of adequate internal controls where necessary.
  • Help drive the US GAAP reporting process through to timely & accurate submission.
  • Provide insight to management on business performance through metrics within GL processes.
  • Monitor and control activities related to GA processing system(s) to assure correct accounting reporting and system controls.
  • Prepare reports of findings and recommendations to NA SSC leadership.
  • Monitor the execution of period end financial close activities and meet all related deadlines.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries as needed and serve as a SME to other GA colleagues.
  • Facilitate quarterly Balance Sheet review meetings with sites.
  • Handle accounting policy and procedure inquiries and ad hoc reporting and analysis requests; provide periodic customer / center training.
  • Ensure customer needs and relationships are fulfilled and enhanced through proactive involvement and interaction.
  • Develop and assist in automating processes utilizing innovative technical and processing solutions.
  • Maintain complete and accurate standard operating procedures and support control documentation requirements (SOX) where required.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelors' Degree in Accounting or Finance, and CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of technical accounting required with practical experience of US GAAP and Statutory Accounting.
  • Public accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Management and supervisory experience required.
  • Strong organizational skills required to coordinate and manage multiple cross divisional work process and projects.
  • Strong written and verbal skills enabling effective communication with management.
  • Ability to operate independently and remain focused through change or uncertainty, and capable of handling multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to analytically review and challenge statutory financial statements to ensure completeness, accuracy, adherence to accounting standards etc.
  • Demonstrated commitment to education and professional development.
  • Proficiency in PC skills (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint) required.
  • Experience with JDE, SAP, Oracle preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical thinking, and organizational skills.
