Field Instructor

JOB DESCRIPTION

Outward Bound Costa Rica has been offering experiential education programs to high school, college students and adults since 1994. Our programs promise challenging physical activities across Costa Rica and Panama, focusing on personal development, leadership, and cultural immersion.

Field instructors play a crucial role in the students' experience and are responsible for delivering an Outward Bound Costa Rica course successfully. They ensure student safety, accomplish course objectives, and incorporate the Outward Bound philosophy into course activities.

Field instructors report directly to the Operations and Program Director. This position requires living in Costa Rica and working 24/7 throughout multi-day courses.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and lead course activities
  • Plan lessons, menus, and accommodation options with the Program Director
  • Manage budget and expenses
  • Prepare gear and equipment for course
  • Manage paperwork related to each course

  • Good physical condition for multi-day hiking and swimming

  • English and Spanish language skills (conversational ability or above preferred)
  • Personal interest in the outdoors and Outward Bound's mission
  • Able to multitask and stay focused despite regular interruptions

  • Tenacity about traveling and creating personal connections outside of work
  • Able to manage conflict professionally
CERTIFICATIONS

The following certifications are desirable but not required:

  • Basic First Aid & CPR/AED
  • Lifeguarding with Waterfront Module
  • Whitewater Raft Guide License Level 2/3
  • NAUI Basic/Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
  • Daily salary rate
  • Travel insurance coverage by Trawick International
  • Access to Outward Bound Costa Rica courses and equipment for personal use when available
  • Use of Manuel Antonio beach base when approved by the Director of Programming

This is a temporary position.

Ability to commute/relocate: Reliably commute or willing to relocate with employer-provided relocation package.
