A Day in the LifePosition Summary:
The CNC Programmer – Technician V, will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining CNC programs to support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities. This role ensures precision machining of complex components, enabling rapid prototyping, design transfer, and process validation. The position requires advanced technical expertise in CNC programming, multi-axis machining, and GD&T interpretation to meet stringent quality and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Program Development:
Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs for multi-axis machines using CAD/CAM software.
Ensure programs meet design specifications, tolerances, and surface finish requirements.
Process Support:
Collaborate with NPI engineers to define machining strategies for prototypes and production parts.
Support DOE, process validation, and documentation for regulatory compliance.
Tooling & Setup:
Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and machining parameters for efficiency and quality.
Validate setups and ensure first-pass yield during initial runs.
Continuous Improvement:
Analyze machining performance and implement improvements to reduce cycle time and scrap.
Support automation initiatives and integration with MES systems.
Technical Leadership:
Mentor junior technicians and provide training on CNC programming best practices.
Act as a subject matter expert for machining processes within the NPI structure.

Qualifications
Education:
Technical degree in CNC Programming, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Experience:
Minimum 7+ years in CNC programming for precision machining, preferably in medical device or regulated industry.
Expertise in multi-axis machining, GD&T, and CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, NX, SolidCAM).
Skills:
Strong understanding of G-code, toolpath optimization, and machining strategies.
Knowledge of process validation, documentation, and regulatory compliance (ISO, FDA).
Ability to interpret engineering drawings and collaborate in cross-functional teams.
Competency Level:
Advanced – Demonstrates mastery in CNC programming and machining processes, capable of leading complex projects and mentoring others.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs a variety of duties in the electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, and/or optical areas.
  • Constructs, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, diagnoses, and maintains equipment, components, devices, or systems.
  • Works from schematics, engineering drawings and written or verbal instructions.
  • Operates related equipment; conducts tests and reports data in prescribed format.
  • Performs calibration and alignment checks; makes adjustments, modifications, and replacements as directed; prepares prescribed compounds and solutions.

TECHNICIAN SUPPORT CAREER STREAM: Provides technical support in areas such as production, operations, maintenance, safety, testing, process improvement or product development. Uses schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions or defined plans to perform testing and troubleshooting on electronic or mechanical components, equipment or systems. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data using established formulae and procedures, and performs detailed mathematical calculations. For higher levels, may suggest and/or make improvements to optimize work processes.

Leadership and Talent Management: May act as a team leader or coach and assistant to the supervisor / manager.
May delegate tasks to other team members and be responsible for the review of work product and processes.
Does not have formal management responsibilities, but provides input to people management decisions in this area.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires minimum of 15 years of relevant experience.

Requires high school diploma or equivalent (United States), vocational or technical education or certification (all other countries).
