Job function summary
The Improvement Engineer is responsible of leading all the machine improvement projects focusing mostly on the Electrical improvements, working together with a multidisciplinary group, quality, production, IT, OT, etc., leading the group to the correct decision, analyzing the feasibility, cost, complexity, impact and other variables.
This person must analyze technical data of the machines, scrap, speed, time between failures, availability, etc., in order to make decisions and provide solutions or improvements to a specific section of the machine. In case of lack of information, the Improvement Engineer must gather all the data, take times, count pieces, and measure any variable needed in order to take the correct decision and provide the most accurate solution.
After analyzing all data, this person should present the project to the project board, looking for approval.
After the project has been approved, he/she will be responsible of designing all the electrical improvements, place the purchase order of all the needed components and/or raw material, track the manufacturing process, find suppliers, provide technical guidance to the TST technicians/suppliers, lead the dismantling/assembly process and provide technical drawings/diagrams for the technicians when needed.
Every improvement must include a handover folder with all the technical data, technical justification, before and after status, technical drawings/diagrams (fully approved in EPDM) and a memory record, that will be handed over to the specific area of improvement. In case of a machine improvement, it will be attached as part of a modification and this change will be tracked in the machine folder in EPDM.
The Improvement Engineer will open the Change Request (CR) or the Engineering Change Order and will make sure that all tasks related to this improvement are handled by the responsible people and are closed on time to stick to the promised timeframe.
Also, the improvement engineer will be responsible of designing new equipment, machines, tools or processes that requires any new tools. He/She must provide the procedures that describes the new processes or how to use the new tools.
The Improvement Engineer as champion of the project will make sure that every task holder performs his/her task on time according to the Gantt chart and will follow every task in order to make sure the project is deliver as planned, considering all costs/investment will not exceed the forecasted investment at the beginning of the project.
He/She will work closely with the Mechanical Improvement Engineers, OT Engineers, PSE, Production Technicians, TST technicians and Operators to identify any machine improvement opportunities in the areas of quality, cost, performance, and preventive and predictive maintenance.
Major areas of accountability
- Actively participation in Lean activities
- Represent the Local Operations Development team in all training tasks outside the country, if required.
- Continuously explore the possible machine improvements in order to increase performance, reduce scrap and downtime of the machines.
- Document all improvement opportunities and roll out all this information to all Coloplast Sites.
- In the absence of the local manager and / or Supervisor, has the right to make decisions and to take the necessary steps to ensure the continuity of production.
- Define and scope each improvement project with a clear identification of stakeholders and deliverables
- Drive troubleshooting and crisis situations to get the project back on track when needed
- Perform the risks analysis & reporting, define and follow mitigation actions.
- Determine and define improvement project scope and objectives
- Predict resources needed to reach objectives and manage resources in an effective and efficient manner
- Prepare budget based on scope of work and resources requirements
- Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget
- Develop and manage a detailed project schedule and work plan
- Provide project updates on a consistent basis to various stakeholders about strategy, adjustments, and progress
- Manage contracts with vendors and suppliers by assigning tasks and communicating expected deliverables
- Utilize industry best practices, techniques, and standards throughout entire project execution
- Monitor progress and make adjustments as needed
- Measure project performance to identify areas for improvement
- Proper coordination between departments to make sure all improvement task will not interfere with the regular production.
